What is the Feldenkrais Method®?
The Feldenkrais Method® is a gentle sensory movement therapy that can change your behavior and self-image.
The Feldenkrais Method® was developed by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984) in the 1940s and has been practiced worldwide for 40 years. Dr. Feldenkrais, a Russian-born physicist, mechanical engineer, martial artist and educator, based his work on principles of physics, biomechanics and an empirical understanding of learning and human development.
Feldenkrais for You.
Through Feldenkrais, you can re-educate the way you sense your movement and increase your self-awareness. This allows you to more clearly link your thinking with your actions.
First, you learn to sense patterns in your movements. As your awareness heightens and you become more attuned to your body, habitual patterns and rigidities dissolve and you reorganize your neuromuscular memory. You move more efficiently.
Feldenkrais Benefits
Benefits include improved posture, flexibility, coordination, balance, and reduced pain. You feel more comfortable in your body, you think more clearly, become more creative, and feel an increased sense of well-being.
Most of us don’t live life to our full potential. Through refining your awareness, you become your own best teacher, which enables you to fully embody and inhabit your life, bringing you comfort and joy!
Feldenkrais consists of two techniques: Awareness Through Movement® and Functional Integration®.
Feldenkrais AWARENESS THROUGH MOVEMENT®
Awareness Through Movement® (ATM) lessons are taught in a group setting. I orally guide you through a series of gentle movements to help you explore and recognize your habitual movement patterns.
In an ATM class, I direct you to move in precise sequences, which help you explore, think, sense, feel, move and imagine.
During the lessons, you will explore basic movements, routine actions, or specific dynamic postural relationships. These may transform ideas you have of posture as static. An ATM lesson often transitions from simple to complex movements, which challenges you to refine your self-awareness skills.
You can do ATM lessons while on your back, side or stomach, seated, on your hands and knees, or kneeling. ATM lessons range from tiny movements that you imagine making to large movements such as getting up and down from a chair or from the floor.
The focus is on paying attention to the ‘how’ of moving, not the ‘how far’ or ‘how much.’ Through this process, you feel the sensory details that are missing and are able to choose different ways to move to increase your comfort and clarity.
Feldenkrais FUNCTIONAL INTEGRATION®
I conduct Functional Integration® (FI) lessons in one-to-one sessions. I use gentle, non-invasive touch to help you improve the organization and functioning of your neuro-musculoskeletal systems. FI is mostly non-verbal, tactile and kinesthetic.
I help you feel how you move your body, and how you can move more efficiently.
FI lessons relate to your desire, intention, or need. As the lessons progress, your intentions will become clearer based on your expanding and improving self-awareness.
I then develop a lesson that is custom-tailored for you. Your new refined sensory awareness emerges from the lesson to change your body movements and your behavior in new and more effective manners.
FI lessons are most commonly performed on a moderately firm table that is low to the ground, which contributes to your improved sensory awareness. You are fully clothed and I may use props such as differently sized and shaped pieces of foam to help you feel new patterns of movement. FI lessons also can be done while sitting, standing, kneeling or while moving.
Through this engaging process, you discover new ways to approach the simple activities of daily life and awaken access to your full potential for vital, embodied living.
